We the people of Decatur, IL deserve the right to vote whether or not to exercise our legal right to participate in the cannabis economy, opening in the state of Illinois on Jan. 1, 2020.

On Sept. 30, 2019, the Decatur city council voted 6-1 to “opt-out” of allowing cannabis based businesses from forming in city limits.

**PRESS RELEASE**

Monday,  December 16, 2019 – DECATUR, IL – Decatur group to go for the November ballot with referendum to petition city council over canna-businesses

The Decatur Dispensary Project announced today that they will continue to gather signatures for the petition for referendum for the November 2020 ballot. The group, organizing primarily via the Facebook group and page “The Decatur Dispensary Project” says that they have nearly 2,000 members and an active team of around 100 people who have been delivering petitions, gathering signatures, speaking up at meetings and events, canvassing neighborhoods and raising awareness about their campaign to add a question to the ballot asking “Should the city of Decatur allow the sale of recreational cannabis and cannabis-infused products

to adults 21 and older?”. The group was formed after an online petition garnered over 2,000 signatures in less than 48 hours before the controversial September 30, Decatur City Council special meeting where the councillors voted 6-1 to oppose bringing canna-businesses to Decatur, IL. The deadline to submit signatures to qualify for the March primary ballot is December 16, 2019.

The Decatur Dispensary Project co-founder Lisa Kendall says, “we are excited to continue to gather signatures for this into the summer. We believe we can get over 5,000 signatures by then having already collected nearly 2,000 since November 4. The community response has been overwhelmingly positive! Many who signed said they are not even cannabis users, but they support the right to have safe and local access to this soon-to-be-legal product. They also see the inherent value in inviting this cash crop into our community and the foolhardiness of our City Council for overlooking the fact that Decatur is an ‘inland port’, as David Horn said at the September meeting. Decatur is uniquely qualified as an industrial hub to play a huge role in the cannabis economy that is about to explode in the state, and it’s completely foolhardy for City Council to overlook these benefits while allowing the widespread proliferation of gambling parlors, liquor store, drive up liquor sales, and bars. This is the continuation of prohibition, plain and simple, and these City Councillors need to do a better job educating themselves, or they will soon be replaced. Many insurgent campaigns have already been announced and the community is ready to take back our city from the monied interests that are controlling our elected officials.”
